... A Vacation With A Difference

The Summerkeys musical programs are designed to offer the busy adult student the opportunity to become immersed in music study and practice.  There are no admission requirements, and the premise is:

"Come as you are to enjoy the study, the work and the beauty of the Maine Coast."

SummerKeys, powered by a dream and a spate of good luck, opened its doors to a sell-out crowd in the summer of 1992.  Since then "music people" (for that would surely describe anyone you find there, regardless of their skill level) have been coming to enjoy their instrument in the peace and beauty of a lovely old fishing village called Lubec.

Lubec, Maine feels stepped back in time.  In a setting of pristine beauty, on a hill at the end of a peninsula jutting into The Bay of Fundy and abutting Campobello Island, it has remained isolated from the frantic quality of modern life.  The international boundary marker between Maine and New Brunswick, Canada is located at the tip of the town breakwater, and you can walk into Canada across the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial Bridge.  One comes away remembering gleaming church spires, white clapboard with green shutters and fishing wharves.

SummerKeys occupies a cedar-shingled structure built as Lubec's waterfront Masonic Hall in 1826; it was later moved to its present location overlooking Johnson's Bay and Campobello.  We recently bought the adjacent house, and also rent space from the Congregational, Christian temple and Sacred Heart churches to accommodate the program's expansion.

                                              General Information

What to Bring:-  Each instrument has instructions for you on their page, so make sure you read these.  Generally speaking, we have a complete library of piano music, including the duet literature and materials for beginners, plus a large collection of popular music.  You should bring versatile clothing as daytime summer temperatures average 60º to 85º F and nights are quite chilly.  You should also bring any music you'd like to continue practicing or begin learning while in Maine.  If you like to walk or beach comb bring good solid and comfortable shoes, sweaters and most of all, if you like great seafood, bring a good appetite.

Accommodations:- Are listed here, some will give you a discount if you tell them you are with SummerKeys.  These establishments are not affiliated with the program.

Getting Here:- Lubec is 11 miles east of US Highway 1 on State Highway 189.  From Bangor International airport it is 116 miles.  There is a once-a-day bus service from Bangor to Whiting Village where we can pick you up, by prearrangement.  However, taking the bus requires some coordination given the distance and the arrival time of the airlines.  While the town is small and you can walk to things, most attendees come by car, preferring the mobility of their own transportation.  Exploring the local sites during your free time will be a major part of your stay, so we recommend that you judge your needs accordingly.

Ridgehouse Auto Service
Auto express service to or from Bangor airport or Concord - Greyhound Bus terminal available anytime if reservations are made a week or more in advance.

WINTERKEYS WORKSHOPS IN NEW YORK CITY

The Mary Potterton Memorial Concert Series:- Mary Potterton (1905-1993) came from a musical family; Papa played the trombone, brother John, the violin and she the piano, while Oogi Wa-Wa (the cat) sang along ("Only I never would practice after your Grandpa bought the Player-Piano; that put my nose out of joint!")  Ever fascinated with the concept of SummerKeys, she helped it begin and always loved to hear everything about it.  The fruits of her interest live on in this beautiful summer-place for music, and in a series of concerts offered to the community in her memory.
